Many were greatly disappointed when the Dream Act was not enacted into law a couple of years ago, but are hopeful that it still has a chance. What better means to provide lawful status to the undocumented minors in our country than to reward them for being good kids, graduating from high school, and looking towards a bright and productive future. We have so many issues with the young people in our country, with our high schools, and students not finishing, that why would we not provide the best incentive for completing school and moving forward with a successful future?
The proposed Dream Act will would legalize the status of young people with good moral character, who have lived in the U.S. for at least five years and graduated from high school.
As it stands right now, our laws are punishing those children who are high achievers in their high schools, who were brought here unlawfully on an involuntary basis, and who likely have no other documented family members who can petition for them. I would like to hear the argument in favor of denying these children the possibility of bettering out country in the future, helping the economy, and reducing drug use and criminal activity involved with our youth.
